Ammonites

ammonite bed

AMMONITE FOSSILS are wide-spread in North America. However, this specimen comes from the huge fossil beds of Morocco in North Africa. It is the most common of the cephalopods that flourished between 200 and 450 million years ago. Living cephalopods today include squid, octopus, and the nautilus (cuttlefish) with its similarly shaped shell. The main body of the fossil is filled with calcerous deposits, which have preserved it after being buried in mud.
