NEPHRITE JADE is not a simple mineral, but a complex blend of silicates. It is found in the centre, and NW corner, of British Columbia, Canada. Today, BC produces over 90% of the world's jade. Its great hardness and soft lustre have made it a favourite for thousands of years, notably with the ancient Chinese, and New Zealand Maoris. Early Chinese cultures rewarded third place with silver, second with gold, and first place with jade! The material can vary in colour, from white through yellow, green (most popular), brown, purple to black. A popular jewelry and art stone, jade is prized world-wide, and is BC's provincial stone.
